The special seminar on integrated urban-rural development and rural vitalization of The Regional Science Association of China (RSAC) was successfully held at Southeast University from June 19th to 20th, 2021. This meeting, hosted by the RSAC, was co-organized by RSAC’s Spatial Analysis Special Committee and the School of Economics and Management of Southeast University. People from at least 20 universities and research institutions joined together to discuss the academic topic of integrated urban-rural development and rural vitalization, prospecting for the new stage, new pattern and new situation of regional development.
The opening ceremony was hosted by associate professor Gu Xin from the School of Economics and Management, also the deputy division chief of the student’s affairs division of SEU. Associate professor Pu Zhengning, assistant dean of the School of Economics and Management of SEU, gave the welcoming speech. Professor Yang Kaizhong, minister of RSAC and secretary of the Research Institute for Eco-civilization of CASS, and Wang Lusheng, deputy division chief of the Office of Humanities and Social Sciences of SEU, delivered a speech respectively.
The scene of the opening ceremony
The main report session was separated into two halves. Seven guests gave outstanding academic speeches from different views on the topic “Integrated Urban-rural Development and Rural Vitalization”. During the session, guests have made deep interactions with other delegates about the speech topic.
The first half was hosted by Professor Xu YingZhi of the School of Economics and Management of SEU. Professor Yang Kaizhong, minister of RSAC and secretary of the Research Institute for Eco-civilization of CASS, gave a speech on the topic “Spatial Economics for the Brand-new Journeys”; professor Zhang Xueliang, chairman of RSAC’s Spatial Analysis Special Committee and Institute for Yangtze River Delta and Yangtze River Economic Belt Development of SUFE, gave a speech on the topic “Heading toward the World-class City Cluster—the Development of the Yangtze River Delta”; Liu Binglian, vice director of RSAC and the dean of the College of Economic and Social Development of NKU, gave a speech on the topic “How to Choose the Best Development Method for Our Cities in This New Development Pattern”; professor Zhu Yingming from the School of Economics and Management of NUST gave a speech on the topic “Accelerating the Construction of New Integrated Urban-rural Development Patterns”.
The second half was hosted by Professor Fu Shihe from the Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics and the school of Economics of XMU. Professor Dong Xuebing, deputy chairman of RSAC’s Spatial Analysis Special Committee and routine vice-president of China Academy of West Region Development of ZJU, gave a speech on the topic “What Factors Contribute to the Spillover Effect of the Center City in Metropolitan Area—Using the Yangtze River Delta as an example”; professor Li Lanbing, assistant dean of the College of Economic and Social Development of NKU, gave a speech on the topic “A Few Concerns about the Development of New-style Urbanization in Our Country”; Liu Xiuyan, deputy chairman of RSAC’s Spatial Analysis Special Committee and youth chief professor of SEU, gave a speech on the topic “Multi-centered Spatial Development and Rural Vitalization”.
The report session
On the afternoon of the 20th, the seminar progressed into four parallel sessions with topics of “The Strategy of Integrated Urban-Rural Development and Rural Vitalization”, “Integration and High-Quality Development of City Clusters”, “New-style Urbanization and Regional Economic Growth” and “Industrial Agglomeration and Regional Coordinated Development”. The parallel sessions were each hosted by associate research fellow Cao Yongfu, the editor of the editorial office of The Journal of World Economy, research fellow Zhang Zhen, the associate editor of Modern Economics Research, research fellow Mao Wei, the editor of the editorial office of Zhejiang Academic Journal, and Professor Fang Ming, the routine associate editor of Finance and Trade Research and the Office of Academic Research of Anhui University of Finance and Economics. Experts and scholars gave their reports and presentations about the strategy of integrated urban-rural development and rural vitalization, new-style urbanization and regional economic growth, integration and high-quality development of city clusters, industrial agglomeration and regional coordinated development, and metropolitan area construction and urban-rural coordinated development, along with passionate and conversations and full discussions.
The parallel sessions
The year 2021 is the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan, also the first year for poverty alleviation to progress into rural vitalization. Persisting in new-style urbanization with Chinese characteristics and the Chinese path to socialist rural revitalization, implementing the human-oriented new-style urbanization strategy, and pushing forward rural development and rural vitalizationin an all-around way are vital to truly succeed in urban-rural integration and regional coordinated development. During this seminar, experts and scholars, faced directly with brand-new problems of integrated urban-rural development and rural vitalization, all presented their outstanding reports and discussions, which would further lead the academic circles to understand China’s regional coordinated development in this new era and promote the subject of regional science to blossom.
